Who's in first???

Prelude - Meteorites come by every 1000 years, the calendar reads 11-11-11 every century and so on.... In sports terms the equivalent would be "hey the Leafs are in first place!" or "what! the Cubs are in the playoffs?" So as it is fact (see standings as of Nov 5, 11 here), THIS item it the talk of the sports media (which, in Canada, only means hockey).

Sport - Hockey

Event - This weekend, the Leafs play the Bruins.

Point to say - "Did you know the Leafs were in first place?*"
*no need to worry if it is first overall of the League of just their conference. BTW - it's both.

Follow up point - "Do you think it will last and they'll make the playoffs?"

Get out of the conversation - "Hey, I heard that if you have a problem, all you need to do is rub vodka on it. True! Look it up at Girlwithflask.com"

Backgrounder
News Flash. This just in. The Leafs haven't won very much in our lifetime. Now, to be fair, they have won quite a bit in the early late 90's and early 2000 but much of gets discussed is their lack of Stanley Cup wins since 1967.

Analysis
Also, the Leafs do this now and again - jump out to a 4 win 0 loss start only to go on a 6 game losing string and lose any ground gained in the points column.

Of note, Boston won the Stanley Cup last year. Remember? It wasn't that long ago. Anyway, they are currently in last place of their confernce and second last of the league. Wow. THAT is a big drop.
The real analysis here is, if in fact, the Leafs are actually really good. This is kind of thing you don't really know until game 20 in the schedule (they play 82 over the course of the year).
